Microsoft (MSFT) returned to its $4 trillion market cap after unveiling its new Maia 300 AI chip. Yahoo Finance Technology Editor Dan Howley outlines the details.
Microsoft regaining the spot in the $4 trillion market cap club led by its latest AI chip. So, what can you tell us there and will this momentum hold on?
Yeah, this is their Maia 300 chip. They have a prior Maya 100 and Maya 200. Uh those uh the 200 is being rolled out uh now and the 300 will be rolling out in 2027. And basically, what they say here is that uh in certain applications, it's better than what's on the market, uh widely available GPU-based systems.
That's basically Nvidia and AMD. Uh and that they're going to have uh multiple uh gigawatt deployments of these chips. So, that means that they are really going to go all out with trying to use these as best they can uh in their data centers. And, you know, it's it's part of their move to, which which we've seen from Google and and Amazon as well, to reduce their dependence on uh what you get from uh Nvidia or AMD and ensure that they kind of have a top-down approach uh to their AI deployments from the silicon to the models, to the agents and so on.
Now, it doesn't mean that they're going to stop purchasing Nvidia chips or AMD chips or Intel chips for that matter. They still need those because their customers may want them. Uh and so what they're doing is they say that they're taking a more heterogeneous uh genius approach where they're going to offer multiple types of silicon options. They're going to offer their own AI services as well as third-party services and allow customers to have the choice that they want.
And that's something that we've seen uh kind of throughout uh the kind of tech industry when it went from uh uh on-premise computing to the cloud. We had seen a bunch of companies say, okay, you can take this deployment or that deployment. Uh different companies opted for different cloud providers, kind of a multi-cloud approach is what it's called. And I think that's what we're going to see here. But with regards to Microsoft's own chips, they do say that it will power a lot of their own software going forward, and that includes their own AI capabilities.
So it'll be really interesting to to see how many chips and and what kind of dependence they they build up for their own processors uh to kind of insulate themselves from a reliance on these third-party chips from Nvidia and AMD.
