Chinese chipmaker Iluvatar CoreX says its new Tiangai 300 GPU can match, and in some cases beat, NVIDIA’s H200 in real-world AI workloads, in the latest sign that domestic players are trying to narrow the gap with the U.S. giant. The newest claims come from a live demonstration for mainland Chinese media that happened on a Wednesday.
Tiangai 300 As A NVIDIA H200 Rival Using Its Own Benchmarks, While Third-Party Testing Shows A Slim Advantage
During the demonstration, the Shanghai-based firm ran text-to-image and text-to-video generation using frontier models such as Z.ai’s GLM-5.3. In one text-to-image test, the Tiangai 300 completed every task and managed 0.101 images per second, compared with an 87.5 percent completion rate and 0.086 images per second for NVIDIA’s H200. However, the Chinese chip did take 0.64 seconds longer to complete the task
It’s worth noting that Iluvatar CoreX’s claims are supported by a third-party test from state-backed Shanghai INESA, which found the Tiangai 300, unveiled in July, delivered 1.05 times the H200’s throughput under typical deployment conditions. Separate reporting from Wallstreetcn says the chip beat the H200 by 15 percent in mixture-of-experts (MoE) throughput and cut first-token latency by up to 30 percent in long-text processing.
For training, the GPU reportedly delivered 1.33 times the effective throughput of the older H100 when fine-tuning Alibaba’s Qwen3-32B. The H200 is the most advanced NVIDIA AI GPU that’s approved for export to China under current U.S. rules. The country has also discouraged domestic firms from purchasing foreign chips, giving rise to local rivals such as Biren, MetaX, Enflame, and Moore Threads, alongside Iluvatar CoreX.
Despite this rise, it’s not like Chinese companies are forgoing the purchase of NVIDIA GPUs entirely. After all, the CUDA software stack is a massive selling point for these firms, which is why even after U.S. export controls have barred the export of advanced AI GPUs like B300, a security firm discovered 32 of these units operating inside China Telecom, likely deployed through smuggling.
Chinese technology behemoths like ByteDance, Alibaba, and Tencent have also preferred the RTX PRO 5500 over Huawei’s Ascend 950PR thanks to superior inference capabilities, suggesting that NVIDIA will continue to have a major presence in the region, despite chips like Tiangai 300 gaining traction. Speaking of Tiangai 300, it’s worth mentioning that the benchmark results largely come from a company-run demo that was shown to friendly media.
The only outside figure, from INESA, is a 5 percent edge, which is hardly a decisive lead, and the training comparison is against the H100, not the H200. Iluvatar CoreX also remains small, sporting a measly 0.3 percent of China’s domestic general-purpose GPU market in 2024. Still, the Chinese firm appears determined in its mission, as not only did it get listed in Hong Kong earlier this year, but it also outlined a roadmap in January aiming to leapfrog NVIDIA’s Rubin platform within two years.
