Nvidia and TSMC both appear in our 10 Best Semiconductor Stocks to Buy for the Next Decade, but they offer different answers to a long-term problem: what happens if the winning AI-chip architecture changes? Owning a manufacturer can spread that technology bet, although it introduces a different set of concentrated risks. NVIDIA Corporation (NASDAQ:NVDA) sells a computing platform built around its chips, networking and software. Taiwan Semiconductor Manufacturing Company Limited (NYSE:TSM) manufactures customers' designs. They are alternative ways to own AI-computing growth, not direct substitutes in the supply chain.

The foundry can serve competing designs
TSMC's advantage is conditional neutrality: it can earn manufacturing revenue from competing customers when their designs use its processes. A shift toward custom accelerators could therefore leave manufacturing demand intact even if it pressures a merchant-chip supplier. The inference depends on where the replacement chips are made; it is not proof that TSMC captures every design win.
Its third-quarter results reported 79% of wafer revenue from technologies at seven nanometers and below. Two-nanometer products contributed 8%, demonstrating an ongoing process transition. Maintaining that position requires yields, reliable delivery and expensive capacity. Our TSMC-ASML expansion comparison explains how much cash ownership of the factories can consume.
Nvidia's opposing strength is that customers buy usable computing, not merely transistor capacity. Its ecosystem and system integration can preserve demand even when another chip looks attractive on an isolated specification. The risk is that customers develop enough software and custom hardware to reduce what they pay for that integration.
Diversification changes the risk rather than removing it
Nvidia's latest quarter generated $89 billion of data-center revenue out of $96.22 billion total, about 92.5%. That concentration creates powerful exposure to infrastructure spending. A broad customer roster would not eliminate a shared customer-capital-spending shock.
TSMC reported a 58.7% operating margin in its latest quarter, but a foundry's customer diversity does not diversify away factory location or utilization. If demand falls across designers, the manufacturer still owns the capacity. Our geographic-risk comparison examines why changing the point of entry into the chip supply chain does not automatically remove Taiwan exposure.
What investors must pay for that distinction
Using October 16 prices, Nvidia's equity value was about 41 times trailing cash after capital expenditure. The equity value implied by TSMC's U.S. depositary-share price was about 47 times, using five ordinary shares per depositary share. These historical cash multiples include different investment cycles; they are not evidence that the foundry is automatically the cheaper route.
Q2 2026 hedge-fund holders increased to 285 from 275 for Nvidia and to 249 from 234 for TSMC. Fisher added 3% to Nvidia shares, and Fisher increased TSMC shares 2%. Nvidia's September 30 short interest was 1.35% of float.
TSMC offers less dependence on a single merchant-computing architecture, provided it retains the manufacturing work. Nvidia offers greater exposure to the value of an integrated platform. The choice turns on whether an investor is more confident in platform economics or manufacturing leadership, while separately accounting for valuation and geography.
