The ancient processor is still being experimented with, and one overclocker successfully managed to break the existing world record after 12 years.
Overclocker Luumi Scores 10.8 Points With Intel's 2013-era Haswell CPU Using Liquid Nitrogen Cooling, Breaking a Long-standing Record
Witnessing overclocking world records being broken has become quite common, but we aren't talking about the records set on the latest Intel and AMD platforms. While prominent overclockers continue to push the modern hardware beyond its limits, some overclockers still want to get the most out of the ancient chips. One such overclocker is Lumi, who broke a long-standing world record associated with an ancient Intel CPU.
The overclocker pushed his Intel Core i5 4670K to an incredible 6.3 GHz using liquid nitrogen cooling. However, the most notable part was setting a new Cinebench R11.5 record. With his setup, Luumi was able to score 10.8 points, something that no one could achieve in the last 12 years, setting a new world record for the ancient Haswell chip. The HWBot page is now live, showcasing Luumi's new record on the chip.
The previous record holder was Strat, who achieved 10.76 cb in Cinebench R11.5 at 6.2 GHz. Other overclockers also managed to score over 10.5 points in the same app at around a 6.2 GHz boost clock. As far as frequency records are concerned, the processor has been pushed beyond 7.0 GHz back in 2013.
The Core i5 4670K was launched in 2013 and was a popular mid-range enthusiast CPU from the fourth-generation Core lineup. It was built on the 22nm process node and featured four cores and four threads. The processor boasted 6 MB of cache, with base and boost clocks of 3.4 GHz and 3.8 GHz, respectively. Back then, it was considered a beast and was also overclockable.
Luumi used this chip on an ASRock Z97 OC Formula motherboard, an enthusiast-grade platform to push Haswell chips to their limits. Paired with 4 GB of XPG DDR3 memory running at 2,708 MT/s and powered by a Corsair AX1600W power supply, Luumi just made history. However, this achievement should be viewed in the context of its specific category. Moreover, its real benefits may not appear significant in gaming.
