Elon Musk's plans to produce chips at his Terafab project might be more difficult to execute than sending humans to Mars, according to an individual familiar with TSMC's internal affairs quoted by the Korean publication Hankyung. The report quotes an official from Samsung, an analyst from the South Korean firm Hanwha and the individual with knowledge about TSMC to share that while building a fabrication plant in itself is relatively easy if capital is available, using it to produce chips with high yield is an entirely different venture that is significantly more complex.
Terafab's Initial Logic Chip Production Likely To Rely On Intel's 14A Chip Manufacturing Technology, Says Analyst
Musk has grand ambitions with his Terafab project as he eventually aims to use it to produce an unbelievable 1 terawatt of compute capacity through the facilities. A key partner for the project is Intel, with the firm's next-generation 14A chip manufacturing process technology expected to be deployed at the facility.
Terafab resurfaced in the news lately after speculation grew that Musk might partner with TSMC for the chip production plans. TSMC being the world's largest contract chip manufacturer would bring significant expertise to the project, and the potential collaboration has not only seen Musk outline that the Taiwanese company might be a sublettor but others warn about his business interests in China in relation to working with a key company for the island region.
However, while Musk might have grand plans, multiple experts quoted by the Korean publication Hankyung believe that it might be difficult, if not impossible, to execute the plans. For instance, analyst Park Joon-yong, working at Korea's Hanwha Securities, believes that the significance of the Terafab project lies in the fact that it seeks to develop an end-to-end supply chain for chips used in applications ranging from space use to autonomous vehicles and robotics.
Park adds that Intel's chip production experience will prove key for Tesla and SpaceX to rapidly develop a production system instead of spending significant time developing technology from the ground up.
However, a Samsung official was more critical of Musk's efforts as they insisted that prowess in the chip fabrication industry was dependent on years of accumulated knowledge through the tricky process of improving yields. Samsung is often reported to struggle with its chip manufacturing yields and the official added that fine tuning equipment to match mass production yields and maintain the optimal combination of process steps should take at least 30 years.
An individual familiar with TSMC's inner workings concurred and outlined that while building a fabrication plant was easy, producing wafers without fluctuations and errors was far more difficult.
The process of advances in semiconductor fabrication requires chip manufacturers to continuously reduce the size of the circuits being manufactured and the individual outlined that a single defect or a difference of seconds in the process steps could affect yields. Using these difficulties, they commented that not only are the barriers to entry the highest for chip fabrication, but Elon Musk might find it easier to send the Starship rocket to Mars than to achieve stable yields with Terafab.
