(Beyond CPO: A Motivation and Approach for Bringing Optics Onto the Silicon Interposer)"이라는 흥미로운 연구 논문도 공유했다.

NVIDIA has developed prototypes of its next-generation CPO and Optical Fiber technologies which will be leveraged by future products.
NVIDIA Aims Advanced CPOs On Future Chips, Moving Optical Engines From Substrates To Interposer
As the industry moves to develop advanced CPO (Co-Packaged Optics) solutions to address AI and compute requirements at scale, researchers at NVIDIA are already developing next-gen solutions that imply a range of advancements compared to existing architectures.
During SEMICON West 2026, NVIDIA presented "Optical Integration for the Next Generation of AI," which discusses how approaches such as co-packaged optics and DWDM (dense wavelength-division multiplexing) can enable tighter integration and help scale connectivity across future AI systems.
The topic was presented by NVIDIA's Principal Research Scientist, Nikola Nedovic, who has also shared an interesting research paper, titled "Beyond CPO: A Motivation and Approach for Bringing Optics Onto the Silicon Interposer" back in 2023.
Today, NVIDIA is much closer to reaching that goal as the company states that it has already developed prototypes of a chip that moves the Optical Engines from the organic substrate to the silicon interposer. The elimination of the organic substrate can lead to higher bandwidth density and lower power consumption.
NVIDIA is calling the technology "OOI" or Optics-on-Interposer. The basic principle is to move the electrical signals within the interposer, which has shorter and fine-pitch interconnects. Think of it as similar to architectures that connect the GPU and HBM closer to one another rather than having them away on substrates.
In addition to OOI, NVIDIA is also announcing that it has developed DWDM, or dense wavelength-division multiplexing technology, which offers an incremental uplift to the amount of data carried within a single optical fiber path. NVIDIA's demo shows eight wavelengths hitting speeds of up to 32 Gb/s, offering 256 Gb/s of bandwidth per optical fiber path. The DWDM technology is already in the research phase.
“We are proposing and evaluating technologies for future products while addressing the challenges that prevent commercialization,” Nedovic said.
NVIDIA is already leading the industry in the development of CPO technologies. They continue to roll out a full spectrum of chips for their AI platforms, such as BlueField-5, NVLink 8 CPO, Spectrum 7 204T, CPO, and CX10. As expected, NVIDIA's Rosa Feynman solutions will be arriving in 2028.
NVIDIA's Feynman GPUs are also expected to go one step ahead of Rubin Ultra on the CPO front when they arrive in 2028.
Recent earnings comments from Lumentum and Coherent have swept aside delay rumors: ultra-high-power CPO laser demand is rising, scale-out revenue starts in H2 2026, scale-up volumes follow in 2027, and customer deployments are expected in 2028. With multi-billion-dollar NVIDIA investments accelerating capacity and R&D at both suppliers, co-packaged optics are set to power the next generation of AI factories, from Vera Rubin onward, right on schedule.
