The Taiwan Semiconductor Manufacturing Company (TSMC) is experiencing booming demand for its 2-nanometer chip manufacturing process technology, which has enabled it to meet 2027's production targets ahead of schedule, according to a report from Taiwan. The 2-nanometer process is TSMC's leading-edge technology, and the report suggests that the cause behind the optimism is strong orders from NVIDIA, AMD and other technology companies. The report follows a separate estimate from Bank of America, which claims that the Taiwanese firm's leading-edge production lines might be booked until 2028 in another shift for a historically cyclical industry. TSMC Set To Accelerate 2-nanometer Production To 120,000 Wafers Per Month By 2026 End, Says Report Today's report is interesting since it projects yet another 20% bump in TSMC's 2-nanometer production capacity. It follows an earlier report, also from UDN, which had claimed that the Taiwanese fab was aiming to bump its 2-nanometer and 3-nanometer production capacity by 20% by 2026 end to 100,000 wafers per month. The UDN report was followed by another report by the Commercial Times, which had outlined that TSMC had dedicated at least five fabs for 2-nanometer production. Both of the reports cited strong demand from key technology companies, including NVIDIA, AMD and Apple. The 2-nanometer process technology is TSMC's most advanced manufacturing technology currently in production. With high-performance AI chips requiring mature processes, those that have been in production long enough for firms to root out any performance problems at high power consumption or performance load are the mainstay. The UDN's report outlines that while TSMC's production capacity was previously estimated to sit at around 100,000 wafers per month at the high end by 2026 end, the latest estimate bumps it up by as much as 20% to 120,000 wafers per month. The new estimate means that TSMC might achieve its purported 2027 production capacity goals in 2026 as it was previously estimated to touch 110,000 to 140,000 wafers per month of 2-nanometer production by 2027 end. The cause of the bump, as per the UDN, is surging orders from technology giants including NVIDIA, AMD, Apple and Qualcomm. As per TSMC's roadmap, the firm will produce its N2P process technology family in 2026 and the N2X family in 2027. On the AI and data center front, N2X is a high-performance technology node geared specifically towards high-speed and performance devices through critical path optimization. The booming demand for the 2-nanometer process is corroborated by a report from Bank of America. Ahead of TSMC's earnings, BofA expects 2-nanometer's contribution to TSMC's revenue to jump from 3% to 11% in the third quarter. An accompanying chart details TSMC's wafer supply, consumption and utilization for process technologies including 5-nanometer and those below it. These cover the 3-nanometer and 2-nanometer nodes. It shows that the utilization for these technologies comfortably sits above 90% in the third quarter. The bank not only expects the supply and consumption of the wafers to grow in the future, but it also expects the utilization to rise as well. By the third quarter of 2028, BofA expects TSMC's wafer supply and consumption for the processes to cross 500,000 wafers per month with utilization touching 105%. Estimates have suggested that TSMC needs a simple 25% utilization rate to remain profitable. Follow Wccftech on Google to get more of our news coverage in your feeds.
